Painting Supply Checklist

Based off my first floor painting project post, I have made a supply checklist with some links in case that may be helpful for anyone looking to freshen up their space!

Drop Cloth: https://amzn.to/3S9XZCQ Cloth drop cloth that is easily reusable, its thickness keeps it sturdy and durable for a lot of uses.

Plastic Drop Cloth: https://amzn.to/425eqDT A plastic drop cloth rather than a cloth one can be more convenient sometimes if you are not looking to store a lot of painting supplies once you are done with your project.

Paint Brushes: https://amzn.to/47pn68X Paint brushes really can make all the difference. These angled ones are great for cutting in to do trim work and keeping it neat.

Paint Rollers: https://amzn.to/3RRQDCm Getting quality rollers makes a huge difference. It keeps a smooth texture on the wall after the paint dries, and keeps you from getting fuzzies in your paint while rolling. A bad roller can leave you with a lot of fuzzies, which once dried on the wall look like wall zits to me!

Roller Frame: https://amzn.to/3NVpGNb The roller frame needs to have a quality “spin” to it. If it doesn’t roll/spin with ease, it will catch and drag the roller leaving a smear. Not a big deal as you can roll over it, but it creates more work and takes longer. Do yourself a favor, don’t get the cheapest roller out there.

Roller Extender: https://amzn.to/3TWrWYb An extender for your roller is essential if you are painting a ceiling or high walls, and don’t want to keep climbing up and down a ladder. It really can be a time saver, and a neck saver. Painting a ceiling with a short roller using a ladder is not recommended, trust me.

Painters Tape: https://amzn.to/48Lhwia Painters tape is controversial in the world of house painting. It is what separates the pros from the amateurs. That being said…I am not a pro haha so I used as much tape as I wanted. People worry about the paint bleeding through and ruining those craved, crisp lines. I found that if I tried my best to dodge the tape as much as possible, and just had it as a safe guard, there wasn’t any bleeding with the proper application of the tape. Also, if you remove the tape directly following your paint job while the paint is still wet, the fear of any paint peeling is eliminated as well. Just be careful as you will have some wet paint on the tape during removal. Just buy the tape.

Brush and Roller Cleaning Tool: https://amzn.to/3tQM5Ek I do not have this tool, but have one similar. This combo of 8 is truly a one and done deal though. The putty scraper is what gets me. Beginner tip-if you do not want to clean your brushes or rollers right away, you can put them plastic wrap or a zip lock bag, and place them in the fridge or freezer. Freezer if you are leaving them for more than a few days, fridge if it’s only a day or two. This is very handy for when you have rolled or cut in, and need to go over it again once the current coat is dried. It is less washing and saves time. Washing paint brushes is such a chore to me. But this scrapping tool definitely makes the job easier. If you take good care of your brushes you will have them for years.

Sanding Blocks (Sandpaper): https://amzn.to/3Sbm5wP Setting up to paint sometimes feels like it takes the longest...buying the paint and supplies, removing pictures, moving furniture out of the way, placing drop cloths, wiping down mysterious spots on the wall, blah blah blah. It is worth the prep for a smooth finish, and sanding is one of those steps. Any tiny holes in the wall or unfinished spackling that needs to smoothed out should be sanded. No need to go crazy, but you don’t want to put in the painting work to look at a blotchy spot as your final product.

Spackling Putty: https://amzn.to/48MT9AI Those tiny and holes in the wall or a slight crack can easily be filled in with a little bit of spackle. Do not be intimidated by this step. It is very simple. You already have your putty knife in your multitool brush cleaner, scoop out a bit of the spackle and scrape while pressing it into the needed areas. Scrape off as much as you can once done, don’t worry about it being uneven because you have your sanding block! Once dry, give it a sand down, repeat this process until you are happy with it. Sometimes it only needs one quick go over. I have used this putty and it dries quickly.

Paint Cup: https://amzn.to/48neO2T This is not a NEED, but is nice to have and it’s cheap. If you are using your brush for cutting in around a room, you don’t want to keep walking over to the paint bucket to refill your brush. A bonus in the cup is a magnet on the inside where you can attach your brush so it doesn’t fall into the paint, and get too much paint on it.

Best of luck with your project! May your paint be smooth and dry quickly.
