About

“Petit a petit L’oiseau fait son nid.”
Little by little the bird will build his nest.

When I met my husband in college, we both quickly discovered our mutual appreciation of French culture, food, wine, and the beauty of the language. Neither of us are fluent, but the phrase above has always been one we come back to. “Petit a petit”…we found that we constantly have to remind ourselves in this fast paced society that it is good to build our home and life little by little. Art mimics life in this way. Rushing a piece of art usually leads to hurried outlines that will require the artist to go over the sketch in greater detail later on. If you create your life in a hurry, you don’t always have the opportunity to recreate those hurried outlines and make them look as you first envisioned. This blog is dedicated to slowing down, enjoying home life to the fullest, and encouraging one another to recognize the simple joys in front of us.

Background

Hi, I’m Emily Olugbemi, follower of Christ, wife, mom, and artist. In college I studied Studio Art at Liberty University where I met my best friend and now husband. We love raising our toddler daughter and son who are just as wonderfully fiery as you would expect from mixing Scottish-Irish and Nigerian blood.

I was born and raised in the woods in Arnold, Maryland, just 10 minutes outside of Annapolis. My mom’s love of literature lead us to a lot of reading, but the stories I most related to were from the “Little House on the Prairie” series by Laura Ingles Wilder. I have always been drawn to the magic in simple living, maintaining what you have, and the reward that comes from eating food by the work of your hands. Growing up, my parents were very frugal and Y2K preppers. We had five gallon buckets of whole grain wheat that we hand ground into flour to make homemade bread and pies. We had goats, chickens, a large veggie garden and no cable. Our sources of fun were the neighbor kids up the road, as well as “Raccoon River,” which was actually a stream over the hill we named from seeing their paw prints in the mud. Catchin’ those “Prairie” vibes yet?

My love for homesteading and nature is what drew me to art and I couldn’t wait to incorporate my inspiration from “Little House” into my own little house and little life. I am blessed to be living that calling, among others, in beautiful Richmond, Virginia.

It is my hope that this blog inspires and encourages you to enjoy the continuous work of not only maintaining your home, but having it be a place of inspiration for you and your family. I will share my heart, my gardening journeys, house keeping/interior design, recipes, DIY’s, home projects, and some art to brighten your space.

Happy you are here!
